A Socially Responsible Approach to Business Process Outsourcing

While military spouses are well-educated and highly qualified for a range of careers, according Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families(1), these spouses have some college, are 30% more likely to be unemployed, 90% more likely to be underemployed, and make 38% less than their civilian counterparts. The U.S. Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership states that as many as 90% of these spouses want or need work, yet frequent deployment can be a barrier to starting and sustaining a rewarding career. This in turn, impacts the quality of life of military families, especially those of enlisted men and women, who often have difficulty making ends meet. And the need is vast. According to data from the Department of Defense (DoD), Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), in 2010 there were over 725,800 spouses of active duty members, and over 413,200 spouses of Reserve and Guard members. In the Veteran’s Administration’s (VA) 2010 National Survey of Veterans, it was estimated that there are more than 15 million veterans’ spouses resident in the U.S, and an additional 5.8 million surviving spouses.

Liberty Source joins the ranks of American corporations that are trying to make an impact by putting over 60,000 military spouses(2) to work—with one difference. Our mission is not only to hire and train these spouses in business processes that are easily transferrable to other organizations, but to tailor a viable commercial offering that harnesses the way they work. We’re starting with one location in Hampton Roads’ storied Fort Monroe, but, over time, aim to develop a network of locations and technologies that makes the work virtual and portable as military families are relocated across the U.S.

We’re still a work in progress. And we don’t pretend to have all the answers. Over time, as we grow, we’ll learn more about tapping into this dedicated pool of employees, not only setting them up for successful careers, but delivering tangible business value to our clients.

Extending the mission of a social impact outsourcing pioneer

Liberty Source extends the vision and impact of our parent company, Digital Divide Data, at home in the U.S. DDD creates better futures for disadvantaged youth in Cambodia, Laos and Kenya through an innovative work/study program that enables young women and men from very poor families to gain work experience plus access to higher education. As a result, they secure professional jobs and earn lasting higher incomes, breaking the cycle of poverty. Since 2001, the projected increase in lifetime earnings for youth in DDD’s program is more than $250 million. Program graduates find jobs where they typically earn three to four times the average salary in the region where they live.

DDD pioneered the model of offering employment in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry to people from disadvantaged families, now called “Impact Sourcing.” Inspired by this model, dozens of other firms around the world now engage in Impact Sourcing. DDD’s approach is unique in that it incorporates a comprehensive program of employment and higher education to support young people in realizing their dreams.

With the establishment of Liberty Source, DDD is now able to further its mission, bringing impact back home.
